Should I plant "different" vegetation in anticipation of climate change?

While there is debate with regard to climate change and discussion about how plant species will adapt, there are several ways to determine if a plant is right for a site. Learn about your USDA planting zone which reflects cold hardiness and look for plants that have been shown to be adapted to your zone. These plant hardiness zones have recently been modified to reflect the changing ranges of plants. It is also helpful to know your heat zone, as some plants can tolerate cool winter temperatures, but may not withstand extended hot weather in summer months or freezing temperatures during cold periods. Understand your site conditions, including the light levels available and the soil moisture conditions, and choose plants that are suited to the site where you intend to plant them.  Use research based information to make planting decisions and you will have greater success and be happier with the maintenance and longterm results.
