Is it possible to make a tree stop producing so many seed/fruit?

Some trees, such as sweet gum, have an infamous reputation when it comes to the kind and amount of fruit they make. The best solution to this problem is to avoid this in the first place by selecting species or varieties whose fruit will not present future problems.

However, fruit development can be significantly reduced with the proper application of a growth regulator chemical. Proper timing of the application is important. The chemical should be applied following the guidelines on the label and needs to be done every year.

For assistance on finding a growth regulator and insuring proper timing, contact your local Extension office.
